The Money Side of Life™ is a program to help young adults get started in life on the right financial footing. The program features two sets of “GUIDES” which take a student through the process of figuring out the next steps after high school.
The “Guidance” set is great for talking to students about Career and College Readiness and preparing to set out into the real world. Covering important topics like living independently and how to nail that first job interview, these Guides talk to students about what they need to be doing now to get ready. The “Personal Finance” Guides focus on getting students to realize that managing their money is the essence behind everything they are moving toward. Money influences all of their future decisions and actions, so budgeting, investing and managing credit are just a few of the crucial topics covered to help graduates start.
A subscription to The Money Side of Life™ provides teachers access to materials which are easy to integrate into existing class structure or which can be used as stand-alone content. All Guides are based on state and national standards and include instructor manuals, lessons, activities and pre-and-post tests. Students do not need to login, all you do is share the link to each “GUIDE” with your students through your normal communication channels.
The idea for brass|MEDIA grew out of a high school business education class when a then young 16-year-old wanted to learn how to invest in the stock market. His dad set him up with an E*TRADE account and jokingly told him that “here was his college tuition.”
Checking his stock portfolio in the high school computer lab became a daily ritual. At first his peers thought he was playing a “stock trading game” but when they realized it was real money, they too became intrigued.
Tasked with an assignment in his business education class to develop a business plan for a class competition, he created a plan to start an investment club at the school. When the judges saw the plan, they thought it had merit. One of the judges happened to work for a large investment firm which ultimately provided a grant to initiate the club at the high school.
One thing led to another and the club started attracting significant attention in the media partly due to its uniqueness but more so because it was very successful. Realizing that young people were very interested in understanding how money works, the student and his dad decided to create a company dedicated to helping young people get started right. Now after 15 years of producing a magazine for young adults about finance brass|MEDIA has launched a new digital platform for teachers and students.
